about the pronunciation of “-ness”?

Question by Soong Bae: about the pronunciation of “-ness”?
according to my dictionary , “-ness” is pronounced with the schwa sound. but whenever i heard the word that containing the suffix of ness such as awesomeness, awfulness from an american. “-ness” almost always sounds like the “short e” sound.
(though sometimes british sound “-ness with short e IMO)

I am an curious english learner from south korea. plz help me out so that i can put my mind at rest

Short ‘e’ as in ‘egg’.

    It rhymes with “Yes.” In addition to being a very common suffix it is also a noun meaning a headland. e.g. Loch Ness (Lake in a headland)

    Schwa is correct. But it seems to me that it borders on a short “e” sound or middle “i” as in “it.”

    The consonants are more important than vowels in English!
